Today I had a chance to be by myself and accept my aloneness. I realized I have need for people to give me purpose. I was struck by the fact that much of my self-awareness needed improvement. I then turned to some reading and writing. While this was taking place, I read a quote by Rainer Maria Rike:
" Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue, a wonderful living side by side can grow, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky."
I must admit at first, I was clueless as to its meaning. With the assistance of Gemini AI, I did gain some insight.
The quote by Rainer Maria Rilke is a reflection on the nature of human connection and individuality. It acknowledges a fundamental separateness of individuals. Even in the most intimate relationships, there will always be aspects of a person that remain unknown or inaccessible to another. This "infinite distance" refers to the inner world, thoughts, feelings, and experiences that are unique to each person. It is a recognition that we are all, in a sense, islands. Yet we can grow in a unique way side by side.
The acceptance of this inherent distance doesn't preclude a meaningful connection. In fact, it's the foundation for a truly fulfilling relationship. This implies that true connection is not about merging or losing oneself in another, but about coexisting with respect for each other's individuality. The key then to the quote: "Loving the distance" means appreciating and respecting the other person's individuality, their boundaries, and their right to be themselves. It means not trying to possess or control the other person but allowing them to have their own space and autonomy. It is about understanding that the distance is not a negative, but a necessary aspect of being human.
I like the imagery used to point out that each of us can "see the other whole against the sky" embracing all our complexities and contradictions. Here the "sky" represents a vast and open space, symbolizing freedom and possibility. Moreover, It implies that by respecting the distance between us, we allow each other to be fully ourselves, to shine brightly, and to be seen in their full magnificence.
I now see my loneliness not as missing a part of me but more as a place to be open to the Oppurtunites of sharing distances. I am at peace... As Lao Tzu said: "To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. " -- Lao Tzu
