Today, I reflect on another challenge: What do we do when we grow weary? Overcoming complacency is one thing, but how do we push forward when exhaustion sets in?
The AA program is not a race to the finish. It is a road to be walked with faith and hope. Each successful step creates momentum for the next. Yes, we may need to rest along the way, but quitting is not an option.
Renewing Strength in Times of Fatigue
At times like these, I find comfort in the words of Isaiah 40:26-31:
"Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
This passage encourages me to carry on for just one more 24 hours. No matter the challenge, I remind myself: This too shall pass. By rising above fear and allowing gratitude to take its place, we can keep moving forward.
Drawing Strength from Past Victories
When I reflect on past successes, I realize, like Alma, that burdens can be made lighter:
"And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions. And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord." — Mosiah 24:14-15
Some may scoff at this, but my experience has proven the above to be true. Even when things did not go according to my plan, they often worked out better than I could have imagined.
So, when weariness sets in, let us remember: We are not alone. Strength is available to us if we ask. And with faith, each step forward carries us toward renewal, healing, and hope.
